Goals

Deliver a genuinely useful free app while preserving a clear, sustainable premium tier

Constraints

Technical: existing hardware & sensor data models, limited engineering bandwidth
Experience & business: legacy premium gating, preserving trust for premium users, novice → advanced caregivers

Project Phases

Leaflet

Leaflet

Improving user trust and engagement in daily plant care through a genuinely useful free experience, while reserving deeper insight for premium users.

Project Overview

Background

Leaflet® is a smart plant sensor and companion app that helps people care for plants using real-time environmental data.
As the product and audience expanded, the app’s fully paid model created friction for new users and limited adoption. Addressing this required redefining how value was delivered, not just changing pricing.

Project

I partnered closely with our software engineer and consumer experience manager to define a new value model, and led the design to transition the app from a fully paywalled experience to a genuinely useful free product, while creating a clear and sustainable premium tier. This work required aligning user needs, business goals, and technical constraints across product, design, and engineering.

Solution Snapshot

The redesigned Plant Profile delivers immediate plant health confidence in the free experience, while reserving historical analysis and optimization tools for premium users.

How & Why

Problem & Framing

Leaflet needed to introduce a free version of the app without reducing the usefulness or credibility of the core plant care experience. The challenge was redesigning the plant profile to highlight essential, day-to-day insights for all users, while creating deeper diagnostic views that justified a premium upgrade without gating basic care.  Our solution needed to:

1

Communicate complex plant data in an approachable way

2

Reduce user confusion around paywalls

3

Support a wide range of plant types, environments, and experience levels

Value Boundary: Free vs Premium

Current plant status

Historical trends & patterns

At-a-glance health indicators

Metric deep dives (moisture, light, temp, humidity

Actionable guidance (what to do now)

Ideal ranges & comparisons

Confidence to care for plants daily

Optimization & long-term insights

Designed for immediate value

Designed for more advanced understanding

Free

Premium

Defining this boundary early allowed the team to move faster, reduce confusion, and design both experiences with intention.

Strategic Intent

Build confidence through a genuinely useful free plant care experience, while positioning premium features for long-term pattern recognition and optimization.

Research & Synthesis
Outcome.png

We are currently exploring how to support diverse growth goals without fragmenting the experience.

Whether caring for houseplants, growing food, or managing cannabis cultivation, future features can adapt guidance and insights to specific outcomes while preserving a shared mental model across the platform.

Raw Data vs. Understanding

Insight.png
Insight

Users want access to data, but struggle to interpret raw numbers and lack context for why a plant is struggling.

Design Decision

Abstract raw sensor values into interpretable statuses and trends, reserving deeper analysis for users who want to investigate further.

Near–real-time visual summaries appear in the free experience, while historical trends and diagnostic views are shown in premium metric detail screens.

With a clear strategic direction in place, I used user research and behavioral insights to validate which plant care signals users trust and act on.  I identified core themes and together, the team mapped these directly to product changes.

Raw Data vs Understanding

Reactive, Not Proactive Usage

Users primarily engage with the app reactively, checking alerts and confirming actions, rather than proactively exploring data.

Optimize the Overview experience for fast comprehension and action, not exploration.

The Plant Profile emphasizes current status and recommended actions, reducing reliance on navigation into deeper tabs for daily care.

Key research insights were translated into explicit design decisions that shaped both the free and premium experiences.

Strategy in Practice

From Raw Sensor Data to Actionable Insight

Research-informed strategy guided designs that translate backend raw sensor data into clear guidance for daily care, with deeper insight intentionally layered over time. Design focused on core guiding principles that informed all layout, hierarchy, and interaction decisions.

1

Immediate value first

2

Confidence over precision

3

Guidance before granularity

4

Advanced insight by intent

Premium Moisture Detail

These design choices allowed Leaflet to deliver immediate value in the free experience while preserving meaningful depth for users ready to engage further.

Solution

The solution centered on clearly separating core care from advanced analysis. We designed the free experience to support confident day-to-day plant care, while positioning premium features as diagnostic and optimization tools focused on patterns, history, and forecasting.

Before

Main Plant Profile Screen

iMockup - iPhone 15 Pro Max
  • A simplified, glanceable plant profile showing current status across key metrics (temperature, humidity, moisture, and light)

  • Visual abstraction of data into statuses and trends instead of raw numbers

  • Clear hierarchy prioritizing actionable insights over historical depth

  • Improvement of contextual guidance to support daily care & basic planning

Main Plant Profile Screen

Each metric has a dedicated deep-dive screen designed for diagnostics and optimization rather than basic care. These views surface historical trends, visualize ideal ranges against actual conditions, and support advanced calculations, such as DLI, PPFD, and predicted watering, helping engaged users recognize patterns over time.

Future Considerations

Platform & Brand Evolution

As Leaflet evolves, this strategic approach provides a foundation for both brand and capability expansion.

The abstraction and progressive disclosure patterns established in the plant profile can support a broader rebrand while maintaining clarity and trust across new audiences.

Diagnostic Depth & Sensor Expansion

Expanding diagnostic capabilities will focus on actionability, not complexity.

Planned sensor development will surface additional types of data like soil nutrients, growth stages, and environmental stress. The design approach remains centered on translating complexity into clear care actions, with deeper analysis available for users optimizing long-term plant health.

Audience-Specific Use Cases

We are currently exploring how to support diverse growth goals without fragmenting the experience.

Whether caring for houseplants, growing food, or managing cannabis cultivation, future features can adapt guidance and insights to specific outcomes while preserving a shared mental model across the platform.
